Business Plan Competition

2018-2022

Project Overview

This brand is for an annual competition that is state-wide wide funded. The main goal was to use neutral colors like black and white that wouldn’t lean towards any collegiate school within the state of West Virginia. In the redesign, the client and I also came up with the idea to update the previous classic lightbulb with a more modern lightbulb, better representing the competition that encourages students to spark innovative and creative business plan ideas.  We also needed this brand to work as a system across multiple competitions and leave room for growth.

I was the lead designer on branding and implementation across social channels, website redesign, and email campaign. I did collaborate with the central University design team in the initial stages. I collaborated with writers and the client to finalize web content through the information architecture framework I created, along with the mockups. I also created a full brand guide, Adobe library, and templates to help inform and prepare graduate assistants to take over the assets needed for this competition each year.

Website

I redesigned businessplanwv.com with an in-house web developer. The previous site was hard to navigate, differentiate between competitions, and the pages were so long with outdated information that also repeated across the site.

A few main points for the redesign are:

  • Color-coding the borders/lines on blogs to differentiate between competitions and both.

  • Creating a blog index for all resources, news, and updates to populate feeds on the home page and main competition pages. This should also shorten the length of pages by linking out to the blog for more information.

  • Easily update features through a tagging system, something that the client will be able to do themselves after we hand off the site.

  • All three colors layered were able to make this fun, vibrating effect on the headline text.

  • We incorporated it into templates for social and digital signage.

Years of BPC and Bridging Innovation

My experience with this competition has included rebranding the competitions, being a part of the in-person Bridging Innovation event, and, most recently, supporting the client through another rebranding process with a former intern of mine who started his own marketing agency. The competition is now known as IgniteWV.
